Everything you need to know about the Kim Kardashian vampire facial – Emirates Woman

Octobers The Bravery Issue Download Now In terms of beauty, other than going under the knife it doesnt get much braver than the vampire facial.

PRP is the term often used for the increasingly popular platelet-rich plasma facial rejuvenation treatment. As the cosmetic industry has continued to develop, you no longer need to go under the knife to see amazing results. Treatments involving lasers and injections can still be daunting however, especially if youre using these for the first time. Platelet Rich Plasma facial rejuvenation treatment (PRP) is one such treatment, commonly referred to as the vampire facial which was made famous by Kim Kardashian in 2013. Aptly named, as the treatment requires blood to be drawn, then put through a special machine to separate the red cells from the nutrient-rich and regenerative plasma. This plasma is then injected into the facial skin, where it is supposedly meant to encourage collagen production and soften fine lines.

Its an incredibly popular treatment globally, which is reflected in the increase in treatment requests within the UAE. American Board Certified Dermatologist Dr Lana Kashlan of CosmeSurge Dubai has witnessed this increase directly. While the sight of the so-called vampire facial can be daunting, Dr Kashlan actually says its one of the safest treatments you can do. So, if youre looking to take a bold step in your beauty regime, this could be the time to do it as Dr Kashlan breaks down exactly what goes into PRP treatment and what you can expect from it.

PRP is a treatment that is really popular with my patients. Its earned the nickname of the Vampire Facial because it involves drawing the patients own blood and extracting the plasma from the blood and re-introducing the plasma to the skin. The platelets have within them growth factors which are proteins that stimulate different biochemical processes in the skin. Specifically, PRP is a great way to stimulate collagen production and improve the microcirculation to the skin. So typically, we draw a patients blood, process the blood to extract the plasma and then either inject or microneedle the plasma into the skin. We can also use PRP to stimulate hair growth on the scalp and I use it to improve dark circles under the eyes. The procedure is pain-free because we use a topical anaesthetic.

PRP is one of my favourite treatments because it improves the quality of the skin with very little downtime and is incredibly safe. Were using your own plasma so there is no foreign material and no risk of allergic reactions. PRP doesnt replace fillers or Botox because the result is different. Fillers are used to replace volume loss and Botox erases lines and wrinkles. PRP works in conjunction with these.

Like most skin treatments, you do want to avoid the sun before and after PRP for at least one week. Additionally, active skin irritations, like eczema or herpes infections are contraindications for PRP.

Typically, patients will have mild redness and swelling in the first 24-48 hours of PRP. Usually one week after treatment, patients will start to notice that their skin looks brighter and more even-toned and feels smoother. This is what we refer to as the PRP Glow. But the real benefits come from repeated sessions where you can see a reduction in pore size, wrinkles and fine lines.

I think deeper chemical peels like Dermamelan and laser-resurfacing procedures like the Erbium laser require a bit more bravery. These procedures are incredibly safe but they have a fair amount of downtime: redness, swelling, and peeling of the skin. This can require someone to either block out their professional and social calendar or be bold and continue their usual activities in spite of a little downtime.

I find that there is a higher level of appreciation for beauty in the Arab world than in the US. Both women and men in the Middle East recognize that taking care of their skin and enhancing their beauty is part of their overall health and wellness. There is a true sense of pride in looking after ones appearance. Because of this, there is definitely a heightened sense of awareness when it comes to the latest procedures when I compare my patients in the UAE to my patients in the US. In Dubai, my patients come in asking for the latest treatments by name. I would say my patients in Dubai are definitely braver and bolder when it comes to beauty and skincare. This can be a good thing or a bad thing. When treatments are done under the guidance of a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, there is nothing to fear. Unfortunately, too often, I see patients who have been botched by other doctors who performed procedures that patients either didnt need or performed them incorrectly. So, I always encourage people to be cautious and to do their research before undergoing any cosmetic procedure.

Interventional Pain Management Specialist Dr. Kaliq Chang with Atlantic Spine Center offers tips on emerging treatment using your body’s own cells -…

Dr. Kaliq Chang

WEST ORANGE, N.J. (PRWEB) October 08, 2020

Among the wide array of treatments available for chronic back pain, one is emerging thats distinct because it uses your bodys own cells to help you heal. Its called PRP, or platelet-rich plasma.

With two decades of research largely supporting PRPs benefits for conditions such as shoulder and knee pain, growing evidence suggests the minimally invasive treatment can also safely improve highly common lower back pain, says Kaliq Chang, MD, of Atlantic Spine Center.

PRP Platelet-rich plasma treatment involves taking a small sample of your blood and placing it in a machine called a centrifuge, which separates blood components. The plasma, or liquid, part of your blood is then placed in a syringe and injected into the painful area of your back while a special x-ray helps pinpoint where its needed most, Dr. Chang explains.

Within weeks, PRP treatment often results in significantly less back pain and a greater ability to perform everyday activities, he says.

More and more patients with lingering low back pain are inquiring about PRP to help rid them of the problem, adds Dr. Chang, an interventional pain management specialist. While additional data is still needed, its great to be able to tell them that PRP is becoming yet another sturdy tool in our arsenal of treatments to help beat back pain.

How does PRP work? Blood contains many substances that help promote the bodys healing process, and PRP treatment was developed on this premise, Dr. Chang says. As the so-called building blocks of blood, platelets which also help form scabs on abrasions, for example contain chemicals known as growth factors that support healing.

Also in platelets are proteins that trigger stem cells which can change into any type of cell to move toward an injured area. Growth factors and proteins work together to repair damaged tissue and make new, healthy tissue, Dr. Chang explains.

While our bodies normally carry out wound healing naturally, PRP injections concentrate those restorative cells at just the place we need them and in larger amounts, he says. In the lower back, this means damaged areas around the spine receive a much-needed boost to speed healing.

Back conditions PRP can help PRP isnt ideal for all types of low back pain, but your doctor after a thorough exam and workup may decide its a worthy option. What types of back problems can PRP treatment benefit? Pain caused by:

Degenerative disc disease, which are worn-down vertebral discs Muscle strains Damaged ligaments and tendons Muscle fibrosis

Two or three PRP treatments spaced over several months are optimal and seem to improve pain and function in the lower back more than a single treatment, Dr. Chang notes.

After an injection, you can expect to have some mild soreness near the injection site that lasts for a few days. Since PRP works by stimulating your natural healing response, it generally takes a few weeks before you start seeing the benefits. Because PRP is derived from your own blood, you cannot reject the cells a clear advantage, Dr. Chang says.

PRP treatments may also be combined with other approaches, such as physical therapy, to maximize the feel-good effects.

Mounting research suggests PRP is a safe, fast and powerful way to help facilitate healing in a hardworking area of our body the lower back, Dr. Chang says. Were happy to have a new and exciting way to help patients get back to their everyday activities with less pain and more joy.

Why some COVID-19 survivors are losing their hair – 13WMAZ.com

Doctors say they see hair loss like this in other situations.

GREENSBORO, N.C. Patients recovering from COVID-19 are now grappling with the aftermath. For some, the shock to the system causes hair to fall out in handfuls. The shedding is temporary but can continue for months.

At the Cleveland Clinic, dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal has been seeing 20 to 25 patients a month with significant hair loss. This phenomenon of hair loss is called telogen effluvium, and all it means is that a large portion of the hair that's normally in the growing phase gets shifted to the shedding phase as a result of some major shock, she says.

The problem isnt unique to COVID. It can be triggered by any shock to the system, physical or psychological, and generally begins two to three months after the trauma. In the midst of the pandemic, COVID is the major trigger.

People are seeing hair everywhere, like in their combs, on their pillows, on their clothes, on the floor. The hair is just everywhere, Dr. Khetarpal says. She says the shedding should end within six months and the hair will start to regrow. She suggests managing stress through yoga and meditation to help speed the process, or using over-the-counter minoxidil.

Colleen Gaffney spent two days in the hospital in March fighting COVID-19 and pneumonia. Recovering over the summer, she noticed her hair was falling out in clumps. When I would brush my hair after the shower, the brush would just be full of hair, Gaffney says. By September, she'd lost about 50% of her hair. All through the front I can feel it, and the actual thickness of my braids were much thinner overall, Gaffney says.

Gaffney also takes vitamin supplements and uses platelet-rich plasma injections to stimulate hair follicles. I got through COVID, I'm feeling great, and now this, it's like its a little extra reminder of what I went through, Gaffney says. If hair loss is the only lingering symptom of the coronavirus, she says she feels fortunate, knowing it could have been even worse.

This type of hair loss typically has no other symptoms. For people who also have itching or pain, the doctor recommends coming in to have it looked at.

A Painless Future Provides the Incentive Behind Cytonics – InvestorPlace

Thanks to the advent of equity crowdfunding, theres never been a better time for retail investors seeking new opportunities. Innovative companies that may not have traditional venture capital backing can now market their solutions to a wider demographic. And thats the case with Cytonics. But its the promising nature of the treatment platform that has many excited about Cytonics stock.

Source: Shutterstock

Cytonics is a biotechnology firm specializing in regenerative medicine for osteoarthritis patients. According to Cytonics SeedInvest.com investor profile, over 27 million people in the U.S. suffer from arthritis-related pain, imposing a $180 billion burden on our health care system and economy.

However, this number is understated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which states that 32.5 million American adults suffer from osteoarthritis. Right there, the case for Cytonics stock theoretically improves by 20%.

Setting that aside, the osteoarthritis profile in this country makes this biotech firm a compelling equity crowdfunding opportunity. For instance, one of the risk factors for this condition is old age. As you know, the U.S. experienced a baby boom following the end of World War II to sometime in the early 1960s. But that increase in baby-making now means we have a massive population of older people.

Logically, this dynamic increases the probabilities of osteoarthritis, presenting a growing case for Cytonics stock. In addition, obesity is a risk factor because according to the CDC, Extra weight puts more stress on joints, particularly weight-bearing joints like the hips and knees.

You only need to go outside to see our national expanding waistline.

Although we can talk all day about the plentiful and still-expanding market size for osteoarthritis solutions, it wont mean a darn thing if the underlying science backing Cytonics stock was lacking. Fortunately, this biotech firm is all about the science.

What separates Cytonics from other therapies is the discovery of alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M), which may hold the key for many osteoarthritis sufferers because multiple tests confirm this blood serum protein protects cartilage. Further, the presence of A2M may halt the progression of osteoarthritis.

Therefore, the catalyst behind Cytonics stock came from an idea: what if bioengineers can inject A2M at the source of trouble, providing both pain relief and preventative therapy? And thats exactly the concept here. Under a three-step process, Cytonics take blood from patients, run it through a centrifuge to increase the level of platelets, and then reinject the A2M-rich solution to the source of pain.

In this manner, patients can enjoy relief essentially through their own blood. However, the present technology of platelet-rich plasma injections may not produce enough A2M to restore damaged joints. This is where the second catalyst of Cytonics stock comes into play.

The biotech firm is presently developing a synthetic version of A2M called CYT-108. Based on its hypothesis, Cytonics believes that its synthetic version is more effective, perhaps between two to three times more effective than naturally occurring A2M.

Now, this is the key factor that has many excited about the potential of Cytonics stock. If the Food and Drug Administration approves CYT-108, this may be the only therapy that addresses osteoarthritis root cause, perhaps leading to a cure.

What lends credibility for the biotech firm is that its natural A2M therapy has treated over 7,000 people in the U.S., leading to encouraging results.

While the science of osteoarthritis treatments makes this equity crowdfunding opportunity distinct, its not without risks you must consider. As with all private investing ventures, youve got to do your due diligence. Remember, most startups fail this is just a harsh fact.

But experimental biotech firms are probably among the wildest investments. Yes, if a company passes advanced-stage clinical trials, the target security could fly to the moon. But such successes are rare, as evidenced by the wasteland of failed biotechs. In addition, you should keep in mind that for decades, the FDA has approved relatively few drugs/treatments.

To be fair, the platelet-rich plasma therapy which Cytonics technology is based off has few major demerits. Thats according to a 2018 study exploring the pros and cons of regenerative medicine and published by the National Institutes of Health. Still, under certain circumstances, PRP applications can result in injection-site morbidity, infection or injury to nerves or blood vessels. Scar tissue formation and calcification at the injection site have also been reported.

Also, the report notes that patients with compromised immune system or with predisposed diseases are more susceptible to infection at the injured area.

Are these acceptable risks for Cytonics stock? Possibly. Nevertheless, according to a study on platelet-rich plasma therapy for knee disorders, many methods have been utilized to treat osteoarthritis but with limited success. Plus, this report states that variables such as centrifugation prep work can negative the effectiveness of plasma-based regenerative therapies.

Im not trying to dissuade you from Cytonics stock. Rather, Im pointing out that theres a reason why successful therapies havent been found yet: this is a tough condition to address.

Personally, Im a gun shy regarding most biotech plays. There are so many variables involved, each one levering a possible negative impact. And I dont think Cytonics stock is any different in that sense.

However, the underlying science is very compelling. Thus, if you can handle the heat, plenty of justification exists for taking a shot. To learn more about this equity crowdfunding opportunity, please visit Cytonics SeedInvest profile.

Could platelet-rich plasma therapy be the answer to your hair loss? – VOGUE India

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP has been used for years to promise glowing, supple skin by way of the popular vampire facial. The same technology is now being co-opted to improve one of the most challenging aspects in dermatology: boosting hair growth and improving scalp health. We spoke to a dermatologist about the therapy to give you a low-down before you bring it up to your doctor.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an extract of concentrated platelets from your own blood, says cosmetic physician and skincare expert Dr Jamuna Pai. Platelets contain packets of growth hormones and cytokines that increase the rebuilding of tissues to enhance healing. When PRP is injected into the area to be treated it restores blood flow, new cell growth, and tissue regeneration, says Dr Pai. Platelets, when injected deep into the scalp, may stimulate a specialised population of cells named dermal papilla cells, which play an important role in hair growth. The plasma promotes growth as it contains white blood cells and platelets, which can kickstart follicular activity and result in new hair growth. Not only has it been proven to improve the quantity, but it also affects the quality of hair increasing the thickness of the hair fibre.

This process involves drawing of blood from the patient, which is then put into a centrifuge to separate the protein-rich plasma. This platelet-rich plasma is then re-injected in the areas required, which in the case of hair loss is the scalp. A minimum of three sessions in an interval of four weeks is required to see appreciable results. One can continue the treatment up to six to nine sessions. You have to wait for eight to 12 weeks to see results. One can continue with sessions for maintenance even after the initial required number of sessions are over, and these sessions can be repeated once every two months for six to ninesessions, says Dr Pai. If the thought of multiple injections into the scalp sounds excruciating, Dr Pai says that pain management with PRP includes topical anaesthesia and icing. Since the injections are on the scalp and scalp is a dense tissue, there is a minimal amount of pain, although its quite bearable, she assures.

In cases of extreme hair loss, the underlying cause has to be detected and treated, which can range from hormonal disorders, stress, or vitamin and mineral deficiencies.Simultaneous PRP injections would help to restore the existing hair and also help the other hair roots to grow. It is always better to start early than late in cases of extreme hair fall because only a limited amount of hair can be restored. Therefore, time is of prime importance here, reminds Dr Pai. Once you begin the treatment, initial signs that tell you if it's working include reduction in hair fall and improvement in the health of the scalp skin.

While it may sound scary, there are no major side-effects to this therapy. Mild discomfort during the therapy and slight pain during the injection can be present. Side effects on the skin with PRP injections apart from the above mentioned can include mild bruising and swelling, Dr Pai says. The average width of the hair improves with PRP, which improves overall hair thickness. For the client to really see results, it takes three to four sessions but small hair starts growing as early as after the second session. The efficacy is 60 to 70 per cent improvement on an average, says Dr Pai.

I enjoy taking care of athletic people and the problems common to them, he said. Ive developed my practice as a knee specialist to care for complex and advanced injuries, and also as an educator of arthroscopic surgery.

Saving lifestyles

Performing more than 500 knee surgeries a year about 150 of which are ACL reconstructions in addition to numerous hip and shoulder procedures, Dr. Meininger focuses on helping patients return to their passions.

One of the best things about being an orthopaedic surgeon is that its a tangible specialty. We identify a problem that we can see, feel and touch; and offer a repair or other ways to physically solve that problem, he said. My practice is about saving lifestyles, not lives. Were giving people the function theyre seeking to pursue the lifestyle they want.

Instructor and author

Dr. Meininger is a leader in the field of arthroscopy, serving as an Associate Masters Instructor of Arthroscopy and volunteering regularly with the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).

As an instructor, I take away a lot of pearls myself just by interacting with fellow leaders in the field, he said. Meetings and conventions provide opportunities and time to brainstorm and develop new techniques.

Dr. Meininger is also a respected author of multiple scientific publications; including two books dedicated to the treatment of sports injuries, author of numerous scientific articles and an invited author of textbook chapters on orthopaedic surgical techniques. Steamboat Springs truly has access to world-class orthopaedic sports medicine care right here in our resort community.

Orthopaedics is a lifelong passion, and its truly one of the greatest things of my life, Dr. Meininger said.

Orthopaedic innovation

Dr. Meininger is an expert in joint preservation, taking measures to restore the joint and prolong longevity in order to avoid joint-replacement surgery. He uses advanced tools for regenerative medicine such as platelet-rich plasma or stem-cell injections, as well as MACI surgery, which repairs cartilage defects of the knee.

Given Steamboats active population, many patients suffer multiple injuries, Dr. Meininger said. He wants these patients to know that when injuries get complicated, SOSI can provide the latest and best treatments right here in town.

We can accomplish anything the big cities can offer, he said.

Dr. Alex Meininger didnt just know he wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon someday. He specifically knew he wanted to practice in a ski resort town.

As a skier, competitive cyclist and outdoorsman, he understands the opportunity for work-life balance that living in a community such as Steamboat provides. It also offers him the chance to relate and socially interact with his patients, almost all of whom are fellow athletes and outdoor enthusiasts.

Maintaining an active lifestyle can also be an outlet and decompression for a stressful occupation, Dr. Meininger said.

Dr. Meininger specializes in sports medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, with a focus on joint preservation and knee injuries, at the Steamboat Orthopaedic and Spine Institute (SOSI). He has gravitated toward knee injuries such as ACL tears and meniscus injuries because theyre prevalent among so many of his athletic patients.
